In the Arms of Love (Andy Williams album)
In The Arms of Love is an album by American pop singer Andy Williams that was released in December 1966 by Columbia Records.[1] It made its first appearance on Billboard magazine's Top LP's chart in the issue dated January 21, 1967, and remained on the album chart for 22 weeks, peaking at number 21.[4]
The title song from the album was released as a single in July 1966, one month before the release of the film What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?, the soundtrack of which is performed by the song's composer, Henry Mancini, and includes instrumental and vocal versions of the song.[5] The film opened on August 31, 1966, and Williams' version of "In the Arms of Love" first appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 in the issue of the magazine dated August 27, eventually reaching number 49 over the course of eight weeks.[6] The song performed even better on the Easy Listening (or Adult Contemporary) chart after debuting in the issue dated July 30 and spending two weeks at number one during a 17-week stay.[7] It debuted on the UK charts shortly thereafter, on September 24, and stayed around for seven weeks, peaking at number 33.[8]
The album was released on compact disc for the first time as one of two albums on one CD by Collectables Records on January 16, 2001, the other album being Williams's Columbia release from April 1963, Days of Wine and Roses and Other TV Requests.[9] It was also released as one of two albums on one CD by Sony Music Distribution on May 14, 2001, paired this time with Williams's Columbia album from the spring of 1967, Born Free.[10]

Song information
- Three different versions of "Remember" charted between May 1925 and February 1926, starting with Jean Goldkette & His Orchestra featuring Seymour Simons on vocal reaching number six.[33] An instrumental recording by Isham Jones & His Orchestra first appeared on the charts on December 12, 1925, and spent a week at number one during an eight-week stay.[34] Cliff Edwards reached number 10 the following February.[35]
- "Here's That Rainy Day" comes from the 1953 Broadway musical Carnival in Flanders, and was covered many times prior to this album.[36] Earlier vocal versions can be found on Sammy Davis, Jr. Sings and Laurindo Almeida Plays (1966),[37] Ella Fitzgerald's Ella in Hamburg (1965),[38] Astrud Gilberto and Walter Wanderley's A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness (1966),[39] Robert Goulet's Two of Us (1962),[40] Jack Jones's Where Love Has Gone (1964),[41] Morgana King's It's a Quiet Thing (1965),[42] Peggy Lee's If You Go (1961),[43] Julie London's For the Night People (1966),[44] George Maharis's Portrait in Music (1962),[45] Carmen McRae's Bittersweet (1964),[46] Frank Sinatra's No One Cares (1959),[47] and Nancy Wilson's From Broadway with Love (1966).[48]
- Frank Sinatra recorded "Sand and Sea" just ahead of Williams in late 1966 for his album That's Life, and one of the song's composers, Gilbert Bécaud, did his own version of it for his 1975 album A Little Love and Understanding.[54][55]
- Organist Walter Wanderley's recording of "So Nice (Summer Samba)", from the album Rain Forest, made its way onto the Easy Listening chart in the issue of Billboard dated August 13, 1966, and spent 17 weeks there, peaking at number three.[56][57] On the pop chart, the debut date was August 27, and the song spent nine weeks there, reaching as high as number 26.[58] Three Easy Listening chart entries by vocalists followed in quick succession, with Connie Francis and Johnny Mathis each debuting on September 10 and Vikki Carr entering the chart on October 15. Francis and Mathis also both got as high as number 17 Easy Listening, while Carr peaked at number 32.[59][60][61]
- Tamiko Jones provided the vocal on "A Man and a Woman" in its most successful version, which was included on her 1967 album with Herbie Mann entitled A Mann & A Woman and first appeared on the Easy Listening chart in the Billboard issue dated October 29, 1966.[65] The title song from the film of the same name eventually peaked at number nine there and made it to number 88 on the Hot 100.[66][67] Ferrante & Teicher first appeared on the Easy Listening chart the following December, and their piano version reached number 24.[68] The next few years saw several others chime in with interpretations on their own albums: The Ray Conniff Singers on It Must Be Him (1968),[69] Ella Fitzgerald on Things Ain't What They Used to Be (And You Better Believe It) (1970),[70] Astrud Gilberto (in Japanese) on Gilberto Golden Japanese Album (1967),[71] Robert Goulet on Hollywood Mon Amour (1967),[72] Engelbert Humperdinck on A Man Without Love (1968),[73] Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gormé on A Man and a Woman (1970),[74] Williams's then-wife Claudine Longet on Claudine (1967),[75] Johnny Mathis on Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head (1970),[76] and Matt Monro on An Invitation to the Movies (1967),[77]
